This 16-story high mural proudly covers the entire west side of the refurbished Pierside Santa Monica hotel which is situated opposite the world-famous Santa Monica Pier. 

MuralShield was specified to protect the mural against the elements including UV sunlight, weather and salt spray. The application process immediately brought out the beautiful color palette which will endure for many many years to come.

Protecting Obey Giant's Latest Mural

Inspired by the beauty of Santa Monica and its rich history filled with creators and rebels of the surf, skate, and music culture, the Pierside Hotel mural welcomes visitors to the vibrant epicenter of Santa Monica's beaches and shopping district.

The Challenge

Earlier this year, artist Shepard Fairey's team contacted us to protect their largest commissioned mural on the West Coast.

The mural, painted on the west-facing wall of the Pierside Hotel in Santa Monica, features bright red and blue pigments that would be vulnerable to degradation with exposure to UV sunlight.

The Solution

MuralShield was specified to protect the mural against the elements, including UV sunlight, weather, and salt spray.

The mural was finished with two coats of MuralShield, a conservation-grade coating that will prevent damage caused by UV, weather, salt spray, and pollutants, prolonging the color and vibrancy of the pigments.
