How to Paint an Electrical Box: From Prep to Protection
Step-by-step video tutorial with Phoenix-based artist Jesse Perry.
In this tutorial Artist Jesse Perry walks us through his process for turning a utility box into public art.
Step 1.
Prep matters! The electrical box used in this project was already in good condition, so it only needed a quick wash to get started.
Step 2.
Once the box is clean and dry, Jesse carefully tapes off city identification stickers, utility information labels and any areas that need to remain visible or untouched.
Step 3.
With everything masked, Jesse applies multiple base coats of primer.
Step 4.
With the base complete, Jesse transfers his sketch onto the box and begins painting.
Step 5.
After the painting is complete, he seals the artwork using MuralShield. This helps lock in color, protect against UV exposure, extend the life of outdoor murals.
Step 6.
For added peace of mind, Jesse applies two coats of World’s Best Graffiti Coating on top of the sealant. This final layer allows any unwanted markings to be safely removed without damaging the artwork.
Huge thanks to Jesse for trusting MuralShield and World's Best Graffiti Coating to help protect this piece so it stays bold, bright, and beautiful for years to come.
