UHILL Walls in Durham, North Carolina is a public art initiative featuring more than 40,000 square feet of murals created by a diverse group of local, national, and international artists.
To help preserve these artworks, MuralShield and World's Best Graffiti Coating were specified as the protection system for the mural collection.
Positioned on 15 contiguous acres, UHILL Walls serves as a centerpiece of the University Hill redevelopment project.
The mixed-use development transformed an abandoned strip center into a destination featuring food, drink, wellness, residential living, and public art.
The site includes a four-story apartment building that will house more than 300 residents and features one of the largest concentrations of mural art in the Southeastern United States.
Located near Duke University, downtown Durham, and Chapel Hill, the project has become a significant public art destination within the region.
In the fall of 2020, the Social Public Art Resource Center (SPARC) Mural Rescue Team was contracted to preserve and protect the UHILL Walls mural collection.
The objective was to help safeguard the murals from graffiti and environmental exposure while maintaining the appearance of the artwork.
Working with a small crew of trained technicians, the SPARC Mural Rescue Team completed the project in just four days.
During the application process, the team sprayed:
