Completed in 1928, Los Angeles City Hall is a designated Historic-Cultural Monument.
Located in downtown Los Angeles, City Hall serves as the center of the civic district and houses the Office of the Mayor. Over the decades, the building has appeared in numerous films and television productions and continues to serve as a backdrop for major public announcements and civic events.
During the summer of 2020, City Hall became a frequent target of graffiti vandalism while a permanent protest encampment occupied nearby Grand Park.
Following extensive cleaning efforts and evaluation with the assistance of conservation experts, a long-term protection strategy was developed to help preserve the building's historic surfaces while simplifying future maintenance.
The project required a solution that would help protect the building without altering the appearance of its historic materials.
For vertical surfaces susceptible to vandalism, 4G Surface Guard Walls and World's Best Graffiti Coating were specified.
For horizontal surfaces including stairs, landings, and paved courtyards, 4G Surface Guard Floors was selected to assist with the removal of graffiti and grime while maintaining the slip-resistant characteristics of the surface.
A key requirement of the project was preserving the appearance of the natural granite walls and columns.
These products were chosen with a mandate of ensuring the natural granite walls and columns are unaffected in appearance and that allow further graffiti removal be done without damage or potential shadows.
A primary objective of the project was protecting Los Angeles City Hall's historic granite surfaces without altering their appearance. According to Project Supervisor Gina Villalobos, the protection system successfully blended into the existing architecture while covering walls, columns, courtyards, and floor surfaces throughout the project area.
