Most graffiti on glass can be removed quickly without damaging the surface. The best graffiti remover and removal method will depend on the type and amount of paint, the surrounding window frames, and whether the graffiti has actually etched or scratched the glass.
For most graffiti tags on windows, storefront glass, and solar panels, start with Graffiti Safewipes or Sensitive Surface Graffiti Remover. Larger amounts of spray paint may require Bare Brick, Stone & Masonry Graffiti Remover, while heavier or baked-on paint may respond better to Transgel.
For most small graffiti tags on windows and storefront glass, apply Graffiti Safewipes or Sensitive Surface Graffiti Remover according to the product directions. These are generally the best starting point when only a small amount of graffiti needs to be removed.
For larger areas of spray paint graffiti on windows, use Bare Brick, Stone & Masonry Graffiti Remover.
If using a pressure washer, stand back and use a green 25° tip. Avoid using excessive pressure.
Be Careful Around Aluminum and Anodized Window Frames
When removing graffiti from windows, do not allow the remover to drip or remain on sensitive aluminum or anodized window mullions. Extended exposure could discolor these surrounding surfaces.
When necessary, mask the frames before beginning. Wetting surrounding frames before graffiti removal can also help reduce unwanted product contact.
For heavier paint overspray or baked-on spray paint, Transgel may be a better option because it can remain on the affected area longer while working on difficult paint.
On interior glass and some shopfront windows, a large razor-blade scraper may also be useful for appropriate applications.
Important: Always test your removal method on a small, inconspicuous area first, particularly when working around films, coatings, frames, seals, or other materials attached to the glass.
Graffiti Safewipes can also be used to remove paint overspray from solar panels. A Safewipe is used in this example, which is essentially our Sensitive Surface Graffiti Remover in a convenient wipe. Either product can be used for this application.
Work in small areas at a time, then wipe away the dissolved paint and product residue with a damp rag. Always follow the product directions and work carefully around panel frames, seals, coatings, and adjacent components.
Acid-etched graffiti cannot simply be cleaned off the glass. Unlike paint or marker graffiti sitting on the surface, acid etching creates an irreversible chemical reaction that physically alters the glass.
In many cases, etched or scratched graffiti can instead be removed mechanically through specialized buffing and polishing equipment.
Glass windows and signage can be protected with optically clear sacrificial laminates or films. When the protective layer is tagged, scratched, or etched, the damaged film can be peeled away and replaced instead of replacing the glass itself.
This can be particularly useful for storefronts, transit facilities, signage, and other glass surfaces that experience recurring vandalism.
